A

Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP)

A

The primary energy currency of every cell. Your mitochondria produce ATP through oxidative phosphorylation. Low ATP output = fatigue, brain fog, and slow recovery. Red light therapy, DDW, and specific nutrients directly support ATP synthesis.

Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA)

A

A universal antioxidant soluble in both fat and water. Recycles other antioxidants (Vitamins C and E, glutathione) and supports mitochondrial energy production. Particularly valuable for blood sugar regulation and nerve health.

Apoptosis

A

A

Autophagy

A

Cellular self-cleaning — the process where cells break down and recycle damaged components. Stimulated by fasting, exercise, cold exposure, and certain plant polyphenols. Essential for longevity and metabolic health.

B

Berberine

B

A plant alkaloid with clinically demonstrated effects on blood sugar, gut microbiome, and metabolic function. Activates AMPK (the metabolic master switch) similarly to metformin. Used in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for centuries.

Beta-Glucan

B

A soluble fibre found in oats, mushrooms, and yeast that modulates immune function and supports gut health. Clinical evidence shows it reduces LDL cholesterol and enhances natural killer cell activity.

Bioavailability

B

The proportion of a nutrient that enters circulation and is available for use by the body. Bioavailability varies significantly by delivery method (liposomal vs. standard capsule), co-factors present, gut health, and individual genetics.

Biohacking

B

The practice of systematically optimising human biology through data, technology, diet, light environment, and targeted supplementation. Rooted in understanding biology at a mechanistic level and intervening accordingly.

Biophotons

B

Ultraweak light emissions produced by living cells during metabolic processes. Proposed by biophysicist Fritz-Albert Popp as a form of cellular communication. Red and near-infrared light therapy is thought to interact with this system.

Chlorophyll

C

The green pigment in plants that captures sunlight for photosynthesis. Structurally similar to haemoglobin. Emerging research suggests chlorophyll metabolites may interact with mitochondrial light sensing in ways that support cellular energy.

Circadian Rhythm

C

The ~24-hour internal clock governing sleep, hormone release, metabolism, immune function, and cellular repair. Disrupted by artificial light at night, irregular meal timing, and chronic stress. One of the foundational pillars of quantum health optimisation.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)

C

A fat-soluble compound essential to the mitochondrial electron transport chain. Declines with age and statin use. Ubiquinol is the active, reduced form with superior absorption. Critical for ATP production and antioxidant defence.

Cold Thermogenesis

C

Deliberate cold exposure (cold showers, ice baths, cold water swimming) to activate brown adipose tissue, improve mitochondrial density, reduce inflammation, and strengthen the autonomic nervous system.

Collagen

C

The most abundant protein in the body, providing structural integrity to skin, joints, tendons, and bones. Type I is dominant in skin and tendons; Type II in cartilage; Type III in blood vessels. Vitamin C is essential for collagen synthesis.

Cytochrome C Oxidase

C

The enzyme in Complex IV of the mitochondrial electron transport chain. The primary photoreceptor for red and near-infrared light. When stimulated by 660nm and 850nm light, it increases ATP production and reduces oxidative stress.

D

Deuterium

D

A naturally occurring heavy isotope of hydrogen. At elevated concentrations, deuterium interferes with the mitochondrial nanomotors (ATP synthase rotors), slowing ATP production. Modern processed foods and water contain higher deuterium levels.

Deuterium-Depleted Water (DDW)

D

Water with a reduced concentration of deuterium (typically 25–125 ppm vs. the standard ~150 ppm). Drinking DDW may reduce deuterium load on mitochondria, potentially improving ATP production efficiency. Emerging but promising field of research.

DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid)

D

The primary omega-3 fatty acid in the brain and retina. Critical for neuronal membrane fluidity, synapse function, and anti-inflammatory signalling. DHA enables the brain to capture and use biophotons — foundational to quantum biology theories of cognition.

DHEA

D

A precursor hormone produced by the adrenal glands that declines sharply with age. Converts to oestrogen and testosterone. Supports energy, immune function, and body composition. Levels should be tested before supplementing.

E

Earthing (Grounding)

E

Direct skin contact with the Earth's surface, allowing the body to absorb free electrons. Proposed to reduce inflammatory electron deficits, improve sleep, and normalise circadian rhythms by syncing to the Earth's electrical field.

Electron Transport Chain (ETC)

E

The series of protein complexes in the inner mitochondrial membrane that transfer electrons from NADH and FADH2 to oxygen, driving the proton gradient that powers ATP synthase. The heart of cellular energy production.

Epigenetics

E

Changes in gene expression that don't alter the DNA sequence itself, but affect which genes are active. Diet, light environment, stress, and supplementation all exert epigenetic effects. You are not your genes — you are how they are expressed.

Ergothioneine

E

A rare amino acid found in mushrooms and certain seafoods. Acts as a powerful antioxidant within mitochondria and is transported into cells via a dedicated transporter. Increasingly studied as a longevity compound.

F

Fat-Soluble Vitamins

F

Vitamins A, D, E, and K2. Stored in body fat and the liver. Require dietary fat for absorption. Critical for immune function, bone metabolism, and inflammation regulation. Often deficient in modern diets.

Ferritin

F

The storage form of iron in the body. Low ferritin causes fatigue, hair loss, and brain fog even when haemoglobin is normal. Elevated ferritin is an inflammatory marker. Both extremes are problematic.

Free Radicals

F

Unstable molecules with unpaired electrons that damage DNA, proteins, and cell membranes. Produced during normal metabolism but amplified by poor diet, environmental toxins, UV radiation, and stress. Antioxidants neutralise free radicals.

G

Glutathione

G

The body's master antioxidant, produced in every cell. Depleted by chronic stress, toxin exposure, and ageing. Liposomal or S-acetyl forms have superior absorption compared to standard oral supplementation. Critical for detoxification and immune defence.

H

Hormesis

H

The principle that low doses of a stressor stimulate beneficial adaptive responses. Cold, heat, fasting, intense exercise, and certain plant compounds all work via hormesis. The dose makes the medicine.

I

Infrared Light

I

Electromagnetic radiation just beyond the visible red spectrum. Near-infrared (750–1000nm) penetrates tissue deeply, reaching mitochondria in muscle and organs. Far-infrared (3–100 µm) generates heat. Both have therapeutic applications.

Iodine

I

Essential for thyroid hormone production. Also supports immune function, breast health, and apoptosis. Modern populations are often deficient due to soil depletion and avoidance of iodised salt. Best sourced from seaweed or specific supplements.

K

Ketones

K

Alternative fuel molecules produced by the liver from fatty acids during fasting or low-carbohydrate eating. The brain and heart run efficiently on ketones. Beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) is the primary ketone body and has signalling effects beyond fuel.

L

L-Glutamine

L

The most abundant amino acid in the body. Essential for gut lining integrity, immune function, and muscle repair. Conditionally essential under stress — the body's demand can exceed its ability to produce it.

L-Theanine

L

An amino acid found predominantly in green tea that promotes calm alertness by increasing alpha brain waves and modulating GABA and glutamate. Often paired with caffeine for a smoother, sustained stimulant effect without jitteriness.

Lion's Mane Mushroom

L

A medicinal mushroom (Hericium erinaceus) that stimulates nerve growth factor (NGF) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), supporting neurogenesis and cognitive function. Used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries.

Liposomal Delivery

L

An encapsulation technology that packages nutrients in phospholipid spheres (liposomes) to bypass digestive degradation and dramatically increase cellular absorption. Particularly effective for glutathione, vitamin C, and curcumin.

M

Magnesium

M

Involved in over 600 enzymatic reactions in the body, including ATP production, DNA synthesis, and muscle contraction. Widely deficient due to soil depletion. Different forms have different properties: glycinate (sleep/relaxation), malate (energy), threonate (brain).

Melatonin

M

The hormone of darkness, secreted by the pineal gland in response to darkness. Governs sleep onset, acts as a powerful antioxidant within mitochondria, and regulates the immune system. Disrupted by artificial blue light at night.

Methylene Blue

M

A synthetic compound with a centuries-long pharmaceutical history. Acts as an alternative electron carrier in the mitochondrial electron transport chain, bypassing damaged complexes. Low-dose methylene blue is explored for cognitive enhancement and neuroprotection.

Microbiome

M

The community of trillions of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, viruses) inhabiting primarily the gut. Profoundly influences immune function, neurotransmitter production, inflammation, and mental health. Diversity is the hallmark of a healthy microbiome.

Minerals

M

Inorganic elements essential for virtually every physiological process: magnesium, zinc, iron, iodine, selenium, copper, and more. Modern agriculture produces mineral-depleted food. Soil health = human health.

Mitochondria

M

Often called the powerhouse of the cell, mitochondria are organelles responsible for producing ~90% of the body's energy (ATP). They also regulate apoptosis, inflammation, calcium signalling, and cellular stress responses. Mitochondrial health is central to quantum health philosophy.

Mitophagy

M

The selective recycling of damaged mitochondria — a subset of autophagy. Proper mitophagy maintains a healthy pool of high-performing mitochondria. Impaired mitophagy is linked to ageing, neurodegeneration, and metabolic disease.

N

NAD+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide)

N

A coenzyme central to energy metabolism and DNA repair. Declines dramatically with age. Precursors NMN and NR are used to raise NAD+ levels. Also activates sirtuins — longevity-linked proteins that regulate gene expression.

NMN (Nicotinamide Mononucleotide)

N

A direct precursor to NAD+ with strong evidence for increasing cellular NAD+ levels. Studied for effects on energy metabolism, muscle function, DNA repair, and longevity. Different from NR in its metabolic pathway.

Near-Infrared Light

N

Electromagnetic radiation in the 700–1100nm range. Penetrates skin and soft tissue to reach mitochondria. Stimulates cytochrome c oxidase (Complex IV), increasing ATP production and triggering anti-inflammatory and healing cascades.

Neuroplasticity

N

The brain's ability to reorganise itself by forming new neural connections throughout life. Enhanced by aerobic exercise, sleep, novel learning, BDNF-stimulating supplements (Lion's Mane), omega-3s, and intermittent fasting.

Nootropic

N

Any substance that enhances cognitive function — memory, focus, clarity, or mental energy — with a reasonable safety profile. Includes pharmaceutical compounds, adaptogens, amino acids, mushrooms, and targeted micronutrients.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

O

Essential polyunsaturated fats (EPA and DHA) primarily sourced from marine life. Critical for brain structure, anti-inflammatory signalling, cardiovascular health, and mitochondrial membrane integrity. The ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 in modern diets is severely distorted.

Oxidative Stress

O

An imbalance between free radical production and antioxidant defence, leading to cellular damage. A driver of ageing, neurodegeneration, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic dysfunction. Mitochondrial dysfunction is both a cause and consequence.

P

Photobiomodulation (PBM)

P

The therapeutic application of specific wavelengths of light (primarily red 600–700nm and near-infrared 700–1100nm) to stimulate biological processes in cells. The primary mechanism involves activation of cytochrome c oxidase in mitochondria.

Polyphenols

P

Plant-derived compounds with antioxidant and cell-signalling properties. Resveratrol, quercetin, curcumin, and EGCG are well-studied examples. Work partly through hormesis — they signal mild cellular stress that activates adaptive responses.

Probiotics

P

Live beneficial microorganisms that, when consumed in adequate amounts, confer health benefits to the host. Different strains have different effects. Quality, strain specificity, and survivability (CFU reaching the colon alive) vary enormously.

Q

Quercetin

Q

A polyphenol flavonoid with potent anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and senolytic (clearing senescent cells) properties. Inhibits histamine release (natural antihistamine), supports zinc uptake into cells, and crosses the blood-brain barrier.

Quantum Biology

Q

The study of quantum mechanical phenomena occurring in biological systems. Encompasses photosynthesis, enzyme catalysis via quantum tunnelling, bird navigation via quantum entanglement, and — controversially — mitochondrial function and consciousness. The theoretical foundation of the quantum health movement.

Red Light Therapy

R

Application of red (630–660nm) and/or near-infrared (810–850nm) light to the body for therapeutic purposes. Backed by over 5,000 peer-reviewed studies. Applications include pain reduction, wound healing, hair regrowth, skin rejuvenation, cognitive enhancement, and metabolic support.

Resveratrol

R

A polyphenol found in red grapes, berries, and Japanese knotweed that activates SIRT1 (a longevity sirtuin). Works synergistically with NAD+ precursors. More bioavailable in trans-resveratrol form combined with piperine (black pepper extract).

S

Senescence

S

The state of permanent cell cycle arrest. Senescent cells stop dividing but remain metabolically active, secreting inflammatory signals (SASP — senescence-associated secretory phenotype). Accumulation of senescent cells drives ageing. Senolytics like quercetin and fisetin selectively clear them.

Serotonin

S

A neurotransmitter often associated with mood and wellbeing. ~90% is produced in the gut. Requires tryptophan, B6, and adequate light exposure (especially morning sunlight) for synthesis. Also a precursor to melatonin.

Sirtuins

S

A family of 7 proteins (SIRT1–7) that regulate gene expression, metabolic function, and stress responses. Often called longevity proteins. Activated by caloric restriction, exercise, NAD+, and resveratrol.

Spermidine

S

A naturally occurring polyamine found in wheat germ, cheese, mushrooms, and legumes. Strongly induces autophagy. Associated with longevity in epidemiological studies. Supplemental spermidine is explored for brain health, cardiovascular protection, and cellular renewal.

T

Telomeres

T

Protective caps at the ends of chromosomes that shorten with each cell division. Telomere length is considered a biomarker of biological ageing. Lifestyle factors — stress, poor sleep, smoking — accelerate telomere shortening. Exercise, omega-3s, and certain adaptogens may help preserve them.

Tryptophan

T

An essential amino acid and precursor to serotonin and melatonin. Found in turkey, eggs, cheese, and nuts. Tryptophan availability influences both mood and sleep quality. The conversion pathway requires cofactors B6, zinc, and magnesium.

U

Ubiquinol

U

The active, reduced form of CoQ10 with superior absorption compared to ubiquinone. Acts as a fat-soluble antioxidant in mitochondrial membranes and is essential to electron transport chain function. Preferred for those over 40 or on statins.

V

Vagus Nerve

V

The longest cranial nerve, connecting the brain to the heart, lungs, and gut. Central to the autonomic nervous system's rest-and-digest response. Vagal tone correlates with inflammation levels, emotional regulation, and gut-brain communication. Improved by cold exposure, breathwork, and singing.

Vitamin D3

V

A fat-soluble prohormone rather than a true vitamin. Produced by skin exposed to UVB light. Regulates over 2,000 genes. Deficiency is epidemic at northern (and southern) latitudes. Works synergistically with K2 to direct calcium to bones rather than arteries.

Vitamin K2 (MK-7)

V

The long-chain form of vitamin K2 with superior bioavailability and half-life. Activates matrix Gla protein (MGP), preventing arterial calcification, and osteocalcin, directing calcium into bone. Critical companion to vitamin D3 supplementation.

Z

Zinc

Z

An essential trace mineral involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions, immune function, testosterone production, wound healing, and taste/smell. Deficiency is common, especially in plant-based diets. Competes with copper for absorption — balance matters.
